自從亞當、夏娃第一次受誘惑上當以後,失敗便成了人類的經驗的一部分。作為上帝形象的承載者,我們能做非凡的事情。但作為墮落形象的承載者,我們能同時做出可怕的事情。從細微的錯誤到巨大的災難,對失敗的痛苦和恥辱,我們都目知眼見。但在上帝的恩典中,上帝挽回祂的子民的失敗,並且使用這些失敗來陶塑我們的生命。

福音之美

內心的偶像

2016年,大西洋雜志(The Atlantic magazine)刊登了一篇名為〈奪取金牌的黑暗面〉的文章,作者弗洛裏奧(John Florio)和夏皮羅(Ouisie Shapiro)在文章中詳述,許多運動員在參加奧林匹克運動會之後,都不約而同地患上抑郁癥。許多奧林匹克運動員在努力爭取金牌的過程中,全神貫注於他們的身份認同。作者引用一段遊泳運動員史畢茲( Mark Spitz)在1972奧林匹克運動會期間,在將爭奪七枚金牌時接受的采訪。史畢茲在采訪說,「如果我遊6場贏下6個冠軍,我就是英雄。但如果我遊7場只贏下6場,那我就是個失敗者。」

When I Don’t Feel Successful

Since Adam and Eve bit on the first temptation, failure has been a part of our human experience. As God’s image bearers, we are capable of remarkable things. But as fallen image bearers, we are simultaneously capable of terrible things. From small mistakes to colossal meltdowns, we are all too familiar with the pain and shame of failure. But, in His grace, God redeems the failures of His people, and He will use them to shape and form our lives.

The Beauty of the Gospel

The human heart craves justification. This is why we make excuses, shift blame, or look for a scapegoat when we have failed. Our natural tendency is to seek personal validation in our successes, securing legitimacy by our accomplishments. So every failed venture—whether a poor grade, a bankruptcy filing, a broken marriage, or simply an embarrassing moment—points out our weakness, foolishness, and imperfection—our lack of righteousness. This ache for justification, for approval in the eyes of others, is the surface rumbling of a deeper ache we have to be approved in the eyes of God. What we really need is the approval, validation, and acceptance of the One who ultimately matters. We need to be justified before God. This is a gift that is ours in the gospel.

“We know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (Gal. 2:16). The good news of the gospel is that we can be declared righteous before God through faith in Jesus, apart from our accomplishments and in the face of our ongoing failures. The gospel is a great exchange: Jesus bears all our failures and is condemned so that by faith we might bear His righteousness and be accepted by God. Through faith in Jesus, we are pardoned and adopted as God’s dear children, loved by the Father as much as Jesus is loved by the Father. No success could bestow this status upon us. So when we fail, we need not be shaken at the core. The gospel says more about us than our failures do. The verdict God speaks over us trumps every other verdict spoken over us by our voices or the voices of others. God uses our failures to wean us off self-righteousness and point us to Jesus, in whom we find a righteousness that is sufficient for our confidence, value, and unshakable joy. In Christ, the power of God’s saving and justifying love can wash away the shame and self-loathing of our sin and failure.
The Idols of Our Hearts

In a 2016 article in The Atlantic titled “The Dark Side of Going for Gold,” authors John Florio and Ouisie Shapiro detail the depression that many athletes experience after competing in the Olympics. Many Olympians wrap up their identity in the pursuit of the gold medal. The authors cite an interview with swimmer Mark Spitz during the 1972 Games as he was going for seven gold medals. Spitz said, “If I swim six and win six, I’ll be a hero. If I swim seven and win six, I’ll be a failure.” His meaning and significance were dependent upon attaining a perfect record. He was in bondage to his performance. How we define failure, and the failures we most fear, reveal what we are building our identity on. They show that we are looking to something other than God’s love and acceptance in Christ to give legitimacy and purpose to our lives.

Our fears also reveal what we prize in our hearts. The Apostle Paul testified in Philippians 3:8, “I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.” The Lord Jesus was Paul’s ultimate prize. Jesus was the one thing worth losing all things to have. This is why Paul could lose everything and still rejoice. Paul had ordered his loves rightly, valuing supremely what was supremely valuable. His great aim was to know, love, serve, and become like Jesus. This is the greatest endeavor of the human heart. In this way, the ultimate success is to know, love, serve and become like Him; not doing so is the ultimate failure. So when the business folds, the relationship falls apart, or your parenting blueprints don’t work, you can grieve the failure but not be undone by it. Loss is painful, but the things we lose are not our ultimate prize and aim. We have Christ, the surpassing value, the pearl of great price, and He is enough.
The Hunger for Final Redemption

If we are in Christ, a glorious future awaits us. Our sins, suffering, and ultimately death are glaring reminders of the reality of our failure. But in the end, in the twinkling of an eye, we will be raised to indestructible life and be rid of shame forever (1 Cor. 15:42–56). One day, we will be glorified, finally free from sin, suffering, failure, and frailty (Rom. 8:18–23). We will shine like the sun in the kingdom of our Father (Matt. 13:43), and we will rule and reign with Christ in the new heavens and new earth (Rom. 8:17). Unending joy, beauty, and perfection await us. But this is not that day. We still fail and fall and do ugly things, all of which remind us that we are not what we one day will become. If we steward the pain of our failure, a holy longing for glory will be awakened in our hearts that will fuel greater faithfulness and passion for the kingdom of God to come. In the end, failure will fail, and we will reign. So, we say with the Apostle John, “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!”

我曾經告訴我的一個朋友,如果他不讀《基督教真偽辨》(Christiannity and Liberalism),我們就不再是朋友了。雖然我(也許?)是開玩笑的,但我確實認為,這本書屬於諸如《神的聖潔》(The Holiness of God by Sproul)、《認識神》(Knowing God by Packer),以及二十世紀其他著名的基督教書籍這一類。以下是梅晨論信心的部分;這部分同樣適用於我們目前的處境,好像是他昨晚剛寫好似的。

「他們說,信心很有用,我們就睜雙眼閉雙眼吧,別再拿放大鏡檢驗它的根基是真是假了。不過主要的問題是,這樣迴避別人的檢驗,本身就意味著信心的崩盤,因為信心基本上是講究教義的。你不管怎樣努力,也無法挪去信心中理智的部份。信心就是認為某個人會為你作某件事。如果那人真的為你做了那件事,這信心就是真的。如果那人沒為你做那事,這信心就是假的。就後者言,不是世上的好處都能使信心成真。」

這是問題的關鍵:「盡管 [這種信心] 使世界從黑暗轉向光明,盡管它使成千上萬的人得到榮耀健康的生命,這還是一個病態的現象。這信心是假的,遲早會被揭穿。」

Machen on Faith

I once told a friend of mine that we could no longer be friends if he didn’t read Christianity and Liberalism.   Though I was (maybe?) somewhat kidding, I do honestly think that this is one of those books like The Holiness of God (by Sproul) and Knowing God (by Packer) and right up there with other notable 20th century Christian books.  Here’s a section by Machen on faith; this is so applicable to our situation today, it seems as if he could have written it last night.

“Faith is being exalted so high today that men are being satisfied with any kind of faith, just so it is faith.  It makes no difference what is believed, we are told, just so the blessed attitude of faith is there.  The undogmatic faith, it is said, is better than the dogmatic, because it is purer faith – less weakened by the alloy of knowledge.”

Machen continues by saying that this type of general faith has no object.  “If the object is not really trustworthy then the faith is a false faith.  It is perfectly true that such a false faith will often help a man.  Things that are false will accomplish a great many useful things in the world.  If I take a counterfeit coin and buy a dinner with it, the dinner is every bit as good as if the coin were a product of the mint.”

“Faith is very useful, they tell us, that we must not scrutinize its basis in truth.  But, the great trouble is, such an avoidance of scrutiny itself involves the destruction of faith.  For faith is essentially dogmatic.  Despite all you can do, you cannot remove the element of intellectual assent from it.  Faith is the opinion that some person will do something for you.  If that person really will do that thing for you, then the faith is true.  If he will not do it, then the faith is false.  In the latter case, not all the benefits in the world will make the faith true.”

Here’s the nail: “Though it [this kind of faith] has transformed the world from darkness to light, though it has produced thousands of glorious healthy lives, it remains a pathological phenomenon.  It is false and sooner or later it is sure to be found out.”

“If Christian faith is based upon truth, then it is not the faith which saves the Christian but the object of the faith.  And the object of the faith is Christ…. To have faith in Christ means to cease trying to win God’s favor by one’s own character; the man who believes in Christ simply accepts the sacrifice which Christ offered on Calvary.”

I recommend this book even for those not in the Reformed/Presbyterian tradition.  Machen was a master with the pen and had a firm grasp on not only the spirit of the age (in the early 20th C.) but also a solid understanding of Christianity.

Christ, the Incarnate Word, is also the content of the Father’s saving speech. The Holy Spirit, who inspired Scripture, is at work within us to understand and embrace the gospel and to bear the fruit of the Spirit. Not only at work within us, the Holy Spirit actually indwells us as the down payment on our final salvation.

Whether our earthly pilgrimage is easy, hard, or a complex terrain of both, we can continue on knowing that the road certainly ends in the great and unspeakable bliss of finally being in the presence of the Lord forever.

Through this Word the Spirit brings conviction of sin, faith in Christ, and instruction in everything necessary for faith and life. Even baptism and the Lord’s Supper receive their efficacy from the Spirit through the Word. As signs and seals of his promises, the sacraments assure us of God’s favor. Shaped by regular exposure to God’s Word, we are able to view God, ourselves, each other, and our world with the proper “spectacles.” Even in matters not directly addressed by God’s Word, the Scripture-saturated mind and heart are able to exercise godly discernment.

His sovereignty and power mean that he is able to work how and wherever he will, but Scripture shows us that he has promised to work in the hearts and lives of Christians by the Holy Spirit through the preached Word and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. While Christian conferences, Bible studies, ministries, and fellowship with friends in community can all serve to encourage and edify us in the Christian life, it’s the Holy Spirit who takes the words of law and gospel, preached by God’s ordained ministers, and uses them to bring about greater love of the Father and Christlikeness in the hearts, souls, and minds of believers. The Spirit also works through the ministry of elders and deacons, as well as the broader fellowship of the saints.

4. 我們今天在哪裡可以看到神蹟奇事4. Where can we see signs and wonders today?

While these signs aren’t wondrous—certainly not as exciting as watching blind men see or dead men rise—Scripture assures us that it’s through these plain, simple, and unimpressive acts that the Father has promised to meet us. He himself is there, washing away our sins with the water and feeding our souls in the bread and wine, assuring us that he is with us always, by the Spirit, to the end of the age (Matt. 28:20). Once again, God may work wonders whenever and wherever he chooses, but we expect to find his wonder-working power where he has promised to meet us.

But over the years I’ve become firmly convinced that the local church is ground zero for worship, formation, witness, and service. Local churches are contextual expressions of the one body of Christ. The church is the people, not the building. To use old-fashioned Baptist language, the church building is the meetinghouse. Wherever the people are, there the church is. On the Lord’s Day, and perhaps other times, we’re the church gathered. When we leave the meetinghouse and head out into the world as individual disciples, we’re the church scattered.

I believe it’s ideal to live near your church’s gathering place for the kingdom’s sake.

From 2005 to 2015, my family lived in Wake Forest, North Carolina, where I was a doctoral student and then a seminary professor. Our church, First Baptist Church of Durham, gathered about 35 minutes from our house. When my wife and I joined First Baptist, we were in our mid-20s, childless, and looking to be part of a healthy church so we could recover from a toxic situation in a previous congregation. The drive was a challenge, but we thought we’d be there for two or three years, until I finished my PhD. We were members for a decade.

Sometimes traffic could make us late; we commuted more than half an hour from a completely different community. Small groups met most Sunday nights, but on Sundays when the whole body gathered in the evening, it was often a struggle to make it back, especially once we had young kids. Our family was only intermittently involved in Wednesday night activities—it could take 45 minutes to get there when traffic was heavier. When I served as an elder, biweekly meetings added an additional commitment that required significant driving time.

In 10 years, we were rarely in the homes of fellow church members who lived in Durham, unless it was on Sunday for lunch. They were hardly ever in our home, since we didn’t live in town. We almost never invited folks who lived near us to visit First Baptist; they couldn’t understand why we drove so far. Instead, we recommended good churches closer to our community. This inevitably raised awkward questions about why we weren’t a part of any of those churches.

三段關鍵經文Three Key Passages

當我們思考教會的本質和使命時我相信有三段聖經經文特別會使我們得到造就。I believe three biblical texts stand out as particularly formative in how we think about the church’s nature and mission.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them.”

國度的地點很重要Kingdom Location Matters

Sometimes this isn’t possible, of course. Some jobs require you to live close to work, regardless of your church membership. Sometimes the nearest Bible-believing congregation is located in a different community. In some heavily populated cities, you may live five miles from your church, yet it may take you 20 minutes to get there. Every situation is unique.

There is no requirement that we live close to where our churches gather. In my own case, I have no doubt it was God’s will for my family to be a part of First Baptist Church of Durham. My wife and I, and eventually our four children, were exposed to the blessings of biblical preaching and sound doctrine. We were part of thriving small groups that focused on Bible study, prayer, and accountability, through which we met some of our dearest friends in the world. We discipled a number of younger church members, most of whom were also connected to the the seminary and made the long commute too. I served as a deacon and then as an elder for most of the years we belonged there.

We periodically considered leaving First Baptist to join a church closer to home. But we never felt the Lord was leading us to do that, either. Challenges aside, we had deep roots, a track record of spiritual growth, and significant ministry opportunities at First Baptist. It was our church home, even though it wasn’t close to home. I’m grateful God called us to be a part of that congregation.

Still, I think it’s normally best to live close to where your church gathers. The longer the commute, the greater the sacrifice involved to be a meaningful part of the church’s life and witness.

About a year ago, we joined our city’s First Baptist Church. Our city. It now takes about 10 minutes to drive from our house to the church building, depending on traffic. We bump into other church members all the time around town. Local outreach is local to us. I thank God for First Baptist Church of Durham—it was worth the drive! But I’m grateful to now be part of a different First Baptist Church. It is also worth the drive—though fortunately, the commute is much shorter and the church’s primary mission field is around me all the time.
