HOPE
HOPING IS BASIC TO THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. ROMANS 15:4
Living between the two comings of Christ, Christians are to look backward and forward: back to the manger, the cross, and the empty tomb, whereby salvation was won for them; forward to their meeting with Christ beyond this world, their personal resurrection, and the joy of being with their Savior in glory forever. New Testament devotion is consistently oriented to this hope; Christ is “our hope” (1 Tim. 1:1) and we serve “the God of hope” (Rom. 15:13). Faith itself is defined as “being sure of what we hope for” (Heb. 11:1), and Christian commitment is defined as having “fled to take hold of... this hope as an anchor for the soul” (Heb. 6:18-19). When Jesus directed his disciples to lay up treasure in heaven, because “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21), he was saying in effect, as Peter was later to say, “set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Pet. 1:13).

An ethic of hope pervades the New Testament. It is an ethic of pilgrimage: one should see oneself in this world as a stranger traveling home (1 Pet. 2:11; Heb. 11:13). It is an ethic of purity: everyone who really hopes to be like Jesus when he appears “purifies himself, just as he is pure” (1 John 3:3). It is an ethic of preparedness: we should be ready to leave this world for a closer relationship with Christ our Lord at any time when the summons comes (2 Cor. 5:6-8; Phil. 1:21-24; cf. Luke 12:15-21). It is an ethic of patience: “if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently” (Rom. 8:25; cf. 5:1-5, where the Greek word for “patience” is translated “perseverance” to bring out its nuance of stubborn persistence in face of pressures). And it is an ethic of power: the hope gives strength and confidence, energizing effort for running the race, fighting the good fight, and enduring the “light and momentary troubles” (2 Cor. 4:17) that still remain before we go home (Rom. 8:18; 15:13; 2 Tim. 4:7-8).

Though the Christian life is regularly marked more by suffering than by triumph (1 Cor. 4:8-13; 2 Cor. 4:7-18; Acts 14:22), our hope is sure and our mood should be one of unquenchable confidence: we are on the victory side.

When Hope Is No More

ife is full of disappointment. In this fallen world of sin, people disappoint us, and we disappoint them. We disappoint our friends, our loved ones, and we even disappoint ourselves. Not only do we ourselves face disappointment in life, we also cannot help but sympathize with our friends and loved ones over the disappointments they face. However, it is not just people that disappoint us. Things disappoint us too. Things we think will make us happy always let us down, and people in whom we try to find our ultimate happiness disappoint. This is particularly the case when we try to find ultimate happiness and hope in ourselves.

Those who think life is all about being happy in themselves by finding happiness within themselves will always be disappointed. That’s precisely how God designed us. For it is only when we become utterly hopeless about ourselves that we really hope in God, and God does not disappoint, because He cannot disappoint. Becoming hopeless about ourselves takes a sovereign act of God, who alone enables us to turn from hoping in ourselves to hoping in Him alone. Hope is a gift from God. Out of the good pleasure of His will, before the foundation of the earth, He has chosen to give eternal hope to those whom He elected from every tribe, tongue, and nation. Hope is given to us by God’s grace, and it is sustained in us by God’s Spirit for our earthly and eternal good and all for God’s glory.

The hope that God gives us is not wishful thinking. It’s not merely a feeling we have when everything is going well in life. It’s not a personality temperament, nor is it simply a self-help strategy. Hope is a steadfast, unwavering conviction rooted in our faith and overflowing into our hearts and minds and all of life. Hope is not the absence of disappointment, it is the presence of the Holy Spirit. For Paul writes, “. . . Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Rom. 5:5 NASB). However, hope is a thing of this world. It will be nonexistent in the new heaven and new earth. We will no longer have any need for hope there, because we will have everything we ever could have hoped for as we dwell with and worship our Savior, who will never again allow us to face disappointment. Therefore, let us not set our ultimate hope on the things of this life, for we will always be disappointed, but let us fix our daily hope on Jesus Christ and our eternal home with Him where no one and nothing will ever disappoint us again.

人的一生不能没有盼望。一个人如果没有盼望,他还活着干嘛?他如果没有目标,干嘛要读书、工作,更别说吃苦了。人活着总要有点盼望,如果一点盼望都没有,日子实在不好过;因为他会失去道德的必要性,生活也缺乏动机,以致心中愈来愈觉得:“吃吃喝喝吧,因为明天就要死了”。他可能会成为社会的寄生虫,一生放纵酒色,沉迷音乐,甚至吸毒成瘾。美国有许多年轻人觉得自己没有什么盼望,居无定所,一事无成,一生无用。我们这个世代被称作“绝望的世代”,我们只要听现代流行歌曲,就会听到他们绝望的哀叹。人如果没有盼望,就不会快乐,甚至活不下去。没有盼望的人很可能会伤害自己,或是伤害别人;这是今天这个世界面临的最大问题之一。

人应该要有怎样的盼望?每个人或多或少,都有一些自己的盼望;学生盼望读个好学校,毕业后盼望找个好工作,年轻人盼望有个好配偶,母亲盼望儿女成器,父亲盼望事业有成,商人盼望赚大钱,老师盼望享美名。一般人的盼望差不多就是这些了,可是这都只是今生的盼望,听起来不错,但其实都是以自我为中心。

不相信神的人在这里会遇到一个很大的问题,就是他们所有的盼望都只在今生,而且大部分会落空。有些目标可能没有达成,有些目标可能达成了,但是不如预期理想。学生没考上理想的学校可能想自杀,失恋可能会使人轻生,工作不顺遂可能会把人逼疯,战乱、饥荒、地震、疾病……这些不能逆料的事可能会把我们一切的盼望都毁于一旦。一个人如果只在今生有盼望,而且每件事都只靠自己努力,那么一旦他的盼望落空,就会觉得人生失去意义,没有价值。可是我们不禁要问,难道没有一个更大的盼望,是我们今生结束之后仍不衰残的吗?难道没有一个更确切的盼望,是不会被夺去的吗?

许多人说:“没希望了!”、“没有天堂!”、“没有来生!”。他们说:“人死如灯灭,一了百了;人一死,什么都没有了”。如果说他们死后还有什么盼望,那就是盼望世上还有人纪念他们,称赞他们。这种人如果盼望破灭,通常也最容易失望;即使盼望实现,他们年老的时候还是会不满足。他们会开始问:“我这一生是怎么过的?我虽然成功了,但这也是努力工作、劳苦流汗换来的;我一辈子这么辛苦,值得吗?”他们年老的时候会被死亡的惊恐抓住;他们面对死亡的时候,地上的成就似乎不能给他们丝毫帮助。有位老人家对我女儿说:“对我来说现在只有一件事最重要,就是能含笑而逝。”这位老人家如果真的要能含笑而逝,就必须有一个超越死亡的盼望。除非人死后真的还有生命,否则任何人临死时都不可能快乐。大家为什么认为来生是一个空中楼阁呢?我们真的可以那么轻松把“死后仍有生命”的盼望一笔带过吗?

人为什么期待来生

 “期待来生”是全人类共有的现象,不信神的人要怎么解释呢?一个人可以不信神,也不相信圣经所说的天堂地狱,但是世上万族都期待人死后有生命,这点他要怎么解释呢?有些著名的科学家说“人是从动物演变过来的”,可是动物与人的差异很大。我们无论研究古代人、现代人,都发现世上万族无论在天涯海角,都有宗教、有神、期待来生;但是动物却没有宗教、没有神、也不期待来生。

美洲印第安人有个习俗,就是如果一个人死了,通常他的马、狩猎武器、甚至他的妻子,都要和他同埋殉葬,好使他在来生仍然拥有他们。伍雷(Leonard Wolley)是发现迦勒底吾珥遗址的考古学家,当时他们先发现第一座城的遗址,等他们继续往下挖,又看到一个大坑,里面有许多不同的东西,挖到坑底的时候,就看到酋长、君王、王后的坟墓,而且旁边都躺着女仆、琴师、武士、骑士的骸骨。这显示人类早在迦勒底王国时代,就已经期待来生了,才会把奴仆和他们葬在一起。日本到处都有佛坛,宗教仪式也是五花八门,这显示大部分日本人都不认同“人死如灯灭”的观念。日本人这一代我不敢说,但是至少上一代有很强的来生信念。我们在世界各地都看见同样的现象,还没有发现哪个民族或部落不相信来生。

一个人如果不相信神、不相信天堂,那么他要怎样解释这个现象呢?人类从哪里受了那么大的影响,使他们都期待来生呢?而为什么只有人类才期待来生呢?

有人说:“人只是另一种动物罢了。人会死,动物也会死,没有什么差别。死就是一切事情的结局”。可是你看过哪种动物有宗教?你看过哪种动物会为它们的来生预备什么东西吗?有哪种动物会敬拜神明吗?为什么只有人类会思考来生、期待来生呢?如果这种宗教意识是演化的结果,那么宗教意识应该是好的,才能在演化过程中保存下来,不至被淘汰;但是他们又说宗教意识是错的,这要怎样解释呢?我相信这个问题的答案在圣经。

圣经有段话说:“神造万物,各按其时成为美好,又将永生安置在世人心里”(传三11)。圣经说神把永生放在人心中,所以人与动物不同,冥冥中知道有神,有永生。“人为什么期待来生?”,我相信这就是答案了。

不管怎样,人非常害怕死亡,这是不争的事实。虽然有人安然去世,但是太多人认为“死”是最可怕的灾难。我永远不能忘记有一位女士慢慢离世时的眼神。我们非得把“死”看成是踏进一个幽暗、未知、可怕世界的入口吗?还是我们能真的平安喜乐地面对死亡?

基督里的盼望

圣经告诉我们许多关于来生的事。首先,圣经告诉我们,很多时候人害怕死亡是有道理的,因为人死后有一个大审判。“因为我们众人必要在基督台前显露出来,叫各人按着本身所行的,或善或恶受报”(林后五10),一切坏事都要受罚,一切好事都要得赏。我们也从太廿五31-46知道,事无论好坏,不分大小,都逃不过审判全地之主的眼目;而我们每个人都作了许多连告诉别人都不好意思的事,更何况要面对全能神呢?既是这样,我们怎能安然离世呢?

不过圣经不是只告诉我们这件令人紧张的坏消息而已,圣经也告诉我们一个非常非常好的消息,就是神大有慈爱怜悯。神爱我们到一个地步,甚至差遣祂的永生爱子来到我们这里,为要洁净我们,使我们成为祂的儿女,赐给我们永生。“因为神差祂的儿子降世,不是要定世人的罪,乃是要叫世人因祂得救。”(约三17

耶稣拯救我们的方式值得我们特别注意。圣经说耶稣为我们的罪而死,意思是当耶稣死在十字架上的时候,担当了一切“坏事”所当受的刑罚,这些坏事就是“每个得救之人的罪”。许多人是耶稣死后很久才得救的,但是那天当耶稣死在十字架上的时候,祂就已经担当这些人的罪了。祂既然为我们担当了一切的刑罚,就乐意在我们信靠祂的时候赦免我们,并且接纳我们作祂的儿女。圣经也这样说:“因基督也曾一次为罪受苦,就是义的代替不义的,为要引我们到神面前。按着肉体说,祂被治死;按着灵性说,祂复活了”(彼前三18)。这是爱的极大表现。神要我们回应神的爱,就是相信神、爱神。如果我们说这跟我无关,那也可以,只是我们这样就得不到神的爱,也得不到神的怜悯了。但是如果我们回应神的爱,就是信靠耶稣基督,并且爱神、感谢神,我们就要成为神的儿女,得到基督完全的爱;神也要赐福我们,使我们充满生命的盼望。就如圣经所说:“凡接待祂的,就是信祂名的人,祂就赐他们权柄作神的儿女。”(约一12

耶稣曾说:“我实实在在地告诉你们,那听我话、又信差我来者的,就有永生,不至于定罪,是已经出死入生了”(约五24)。神应许我们得生命;这生命永不衰残,永远充满喜乐,克服一切死亡、恐惧、忧伤、痛苦;这生命是与神同在的生命,充满祂的祝福与爱。这种生命如此高超,即使圣经也难以完全形容。神把这个生命与盼望赐给一切信靠祂儿子耶稣基督的人。我相信了,盼望您也相信。

“死啊,你得胜的权势在哪里?死啊,你的毒钩在哪里?死的毒钩就是罪,罪的权势就是律法。感谢神,使我们藉着我们的主耶稣基督得胜。”(林前十五55-57

87. 盼望Hope

在這個世上有很多事是我們「盼望」的我們盼望加薪盼望所支持的球隊得勝這些盼望表達出我們對未來的願望。我們盼望一些不確定的事,不知道我們的願望會不會實現,但我們堅持希望它能實現。

但是當聖經談到盼望時,它的觀點就不同了。聖經所說的盼望是一個堅定的信念,相信神的應許未來一定會實現。聖經的盼望不是一廂情願的想法,而是對將會實現之事的一種肯定。「我們有這指望如同靈魂的錨,又堅固又牢靠,且通入幔内。」(來6 :19)

盼望與信和愛同為保羅在哥林多前書十三章13節所列的基督徒三種德行 之一,而盼望是指向未來事物的信心。

聖經中對盼望一詞有兩種不同的用法。第一種較少使用,它是指我們所盼望的對象:基督是我們永生的盼望。而較常見的一種用法,則是指對神之應許所持的確信態度神呼召基督徒要心存盼望 ,就是對神子民復活和神國將降臨二事有完全的把握;盼望與末世論是息息相關的。

保羅提醒基督徒,在國度完滿實現之前,信徒只能心存確實的盼望:「我們行事為人是憑著信心,不是憑著眼見。」(林後5: 7)而這種盼望並非沒有根據,雖然基督徒的人生是苦難多於勝利(林前 4 8- 13;林後 4: 7 -1 8 ),但我們盼望的根基在於神。

首先,信徒仰望基督的死與復活。基督的死對門徒來說是他們一生最黑暗的時刻,神所應許降世的彌賽亞死了,神的國度似乎不再存在;但是基督的復活卻使絕望變成盼望。基督徒在各種大小苦難中,必須持守盼望,因為神永遠是豐富和信實的。

87.  HOPE

There are many things in this world we “hope” for. We hope that we will receive a raise in our salary. We hope that our favorite team will win the World Series. This kind of hope expresses our personal desires for the future. We have hope concerning things that are uncertain. We don’t know if our desires will come to pass, but we hold out hope that they will.

When the Bible speaks of hope, however, it has something different in view. Biblical hope is a firm conviction that the future promises of God
will be fulfilled. Hope is not mere wish projection, but an assurance of what will come to pass. “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil” (Hebrews 6:19).
Hope takes its place alongside faith and love as one of the Christian virtues that the apostle Paul sets forth in 1 Corinthians 13:13. Hope is faith directed toward the future.

Hope is used in two ways in the Bible. The less common usage points out the object of our hope. Christ is our hope of eternal life. The more common usage is as an attitude of assurance regarding the fulfillment of God’s promises. The Christian is called to hope, that is, to have full assurance of the resurrection of God’s people and the coming of God’s kingdom. Hope is inextricably bound up with eschatology.

Paul reminds Christians that until the kingdom comes in its fullness, believers can only have an assured hope; they must “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). This hope is neither unfounded nor groundless. Though the life of the Christian is marked more by suffering than triumph (1 Corinthians 4:8-13; 2 Corinthians 4:7-18), the foundation for hope is in the Godhead.

First, the believer looks upon the death and resurrection of Christ. His death was the darkest hour for His disciples. The promised Messiah was dead, His kingdom apparently lost. With the Resurrection, that despair turned to hope. Alongside suffering, whether great or small, the Christian’s hope must endure. God is always sufficient and faithful.

Second, the believer has the Holy Spirit as a down payment on the kingdom. His presence assures us that the kingdom will be fully consummated. The Spirit is not only a sign toward hope, but the sustainer of hope. He fulfills the role of Comforter, girding up the believer in strength and hope. It is the Spirit that encourages the believer to pray to the Father, “Your kingdom come.”

Summary

保羅沒有描述使他連活命的指望都絕了的究竟是什麼事,但是他讓我們知道,這是超過他所能承擔的!在哥林多後書一章810節,保羅給我們在困難的問題上,上了小小的一課——這是當我們「被壓太重、力不能勝」的時候,神給我們的生命線。Paul doesnt describe the affliction that caused him to despair even of life, but he does let us know that it was more than he could bear! In 2 Corinthians 1:8–10, Paul gives us a minicourse on affliction—a divine lifeline for those times when we are “burdened beyond our strength.”

苦難的現實The Reality of Affliction
「自己心裡也斷定是必死的」(林後一9a)“Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death (2 Cor. 1:9a).

保羅在他寫給哥林多人的信中,對於他所受的磨難究竟是什麼,刻意保持模糊。細節並不重要,重要的是保羅試圖要把他所感受到的痛苦和絕望傳達給他的讀者。這意味著面對各種形式的苦難、災難、痛苦的基督徒,可以和保羅認同,也同樣得到幫助。In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul is intentionally vague about the nature of his suffering. The specifics arent important. It is the reality of the pain and hopelessness he felt that Paul seeks to convey to his readers. This means that Christians who face various forms of suffering, affliction, and pain can identify with Paul and be helped in the same way.

這個苦難壓迫著保羅,超過了他的底線。當時的處境如此絕望,並且是遠遠超過他所能處理的,以至於他以為他就要死了。保羅的措詞是被關押在死囚室的人所說的話。他身處在一個絕望的處境裏,無法靠人力逃脫。This affliction had pushed Paul beyond his limits. His situation was so desperate and utterly beyond his ability to handle, that he thought he was going to die. The very words Paul uses are those of a man on death row. He was in a hopeless situation with no human way of escape.

上帝是否只給我們力所能擔當的事?根據保羅,不是!倘若上帝只給我們自己能處對付的事,只給我們靠自己可以擔當的,我們為什麼還需要祂?倘若我們有能力處理此生中出現的所有問題,有可能我們自己裏面也擁有處理來世問題的能力。Does God only give us what we can bear? Not according to Paul! If God only gives us what we can handle, if he only gives us what we can bear, why do we need him? If we have the ability to handle what comes our way in this life, just maybe we have within us the ability to deal with the next life as well.

苦難的原因The Reason for Affliction
「叫我們不靠自己,只靠叫死人復活的神。」(林後一9b)“But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead (2 Cor. 1:9b).

苦難的背後有上帝預旨的目的,即改變我們對自己的看法。保羅在這裏的話,字面上的意思是:「叫我們不靠自己而站立……」他受到的重壓超過他人類能力的範圍,在面對必然的死亡時,自我倚靠是完全派不上用場的。這種痛苦帶領他來到一個必須倚靠至高者的境地,祂不僅擁有勝過死亡的權勢,也已經擊敗了死亡。Afflictions have a divinely ordained purpose, namely, to change our perspective regarding ourselves. Pauls words here literally mean, “to make us stand not relying on our ourselves…” He was pushed beyond the limits of his human ability and was confronted with the complete inadequacy of self-reliance in the face of certain death. This pain brought him to the place of dependence upon the One who not only has power over death but also has defeated it.

這就是為什麼苦難是上帝要給我們的化妝的祝福的原因。當我們受壓超過我們的能力範圍,這些沉重的掌管護佑(hard providences)就揭示出我們無力對付終極的現實:死亡。若我們無法對付癌症,我們憑什麼認為我們有能力對付死亡呢?這些「難以承擔」的時刻是上帝吸引我們憑著單純的信心更靠近祂的時刻。This is why afflictions are a divine blessing in disguise. When we are pressed beyond our limits, these hard providences reveal our inability to deal with the ultimate reality: death. If we can’t handle cancer, what makes us think we can handle death? These “unbearable” times are when God draws us closer to himself in simple faith.

對苦難的回應The Response to Affliction
「祂曾救我們脫離那極大的死亡,現在仍要救我們,並且我們指望祂將來還要救我們。」(林後一10He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again (2 Cor. 1:10).

因為我們深知那位良善和滿有恩典的上帝,在我們的苦痛中仍在行事,為要叫我們更加唯獨倚靠祂,我們就能用盼望來回應這些時刻。Because we know that our good and gracious God is at work in our pain to bring us to a greater dependence upon him alone, we can respond to these times with hope.

盼望是在苦難的土壤裏生長出來的。在這個肥沃的土地上,聖靈讓我們察覺到我們在基督裏滿有榮耀的盼望。我們滿有恩典的天父的確經常拯救我們脫離今生的許多苦難,但是這些暫時的拯救會使我們用盼望仰望未來,並期待那尚未到來的偉大拯救。雖然我們無法確定上帝是否會除去我們現在正在面對的壓迫著我們的重擔,但是我們有祂終極拯救的確據。祂是那叫死人復活的,是我們所注目盼望的就是祂。Hope grows in the soil of affliction. In this fertile ground, the Holy Spirit makes us aware of the glorious hope we have in Christ. Our gracious heavenly Father often does deliver us from the many afflictions of this life, but these temporal deliverances cause us to look to the future with hope and anticipation for the great deliverance yet to come. While we cannot be certain that God will remove the crushing burden we face right now, we can be assured of his ultimate deliverance. He is the one who raises the dead, and upon him we have set our hope.

福音的應許不是我們今生所有的難題都會得到解決,或者我們絕對不會面對超過我們能力所能承擔的難題。福音的中心是基督。祂是我們所需要的一切。祂是我們唯一的盼望。愛我們的天父上帝經常會將超過我們能力的事加在我們身上,為要叫我們更加倚靠基督,祂是我們真正的力量。祂甚至會帶領我們對生命本身不存指望,好叫我們可以在那位叫死人復活的至高者身上找到安慰和安息的力量。The gospel is not a promise that all our problems in this life will be solvedor that we will never face anything beyond our ability to bear. The gospel is all about Christ. He is everything we need. He is our only hope. Our loving heavenly Father often burdens us beyond our ability in order to deepen our dependence upon Christ, who is our true strength. He may even bring us to despair of life itself, so that we might find the comfort and strength of resting on the One who raises the dead.
